Why New Year’s Resolutions Fail

Well here we are well into the new year, about 4 weeks after making anywhere from one to several New Year’s Resolutions. I’m curious, how are those working out for you? If you are like most of the U.S. population, I’m going to bet not so well. If you’re failing or have already called it quits, I promise, you are not alone.

So if that’s the case, tell me, why do we make these resolutions? Nobody wants to be a failure! Why set ourselves up to fail at something we want so badly to achieve? Our best intentions are behind the making of these goals, of that I am certain. Our desire to succeed is most often through the roof! Which is precisely why we feel so badly when we are not able to accomplish what we set out to do.

So let’s get to the point here. Why are so many of us failing to do something we want so badly to do? I can think of a few reasons I would like to share with you.

The time to start changing something about ourselves that we aren’t happy with isn’t January 1st, it isn’t tomorrow and it wasn’t last week. The time is NOW. At this very moment. Any moment in time that you chose to do something new is a beginning for you. There is no ‘special’ time that will guarantee you to be successful at achieving your goal.

We need a plan. Your only planning for your goal cannot be a start time. You’re going to have to do a little more work than that. For instance, if your goal was to lose weight, exactly how were you going to do it? A plan such as committing to walk 30 minutes every day, eliminating late night desserts and giving up sweetened beverages is certainly a good start! You have to be precise about what you want and how you’re going to get there to ensure success. Sure you could live in Rhode Island and say you want to drive to California, head west and find your way there. Eventually you’ll get there. But no doubt it will be a long and painful process. If you want to get there in the least amount of time possible, have a comfortable ride, a guaranteed place to sleep and eat each night, you better have a map for routing and a directory of places to stay and eat along the way. With thoughtful preparation your journey will be a lot more organized, pleasant and successful.

So if you’re feeling like you’ve failed your New Year’s resolution I hope you will find these words as encouragement and resolve to start fresh, start now. Make a plan, be precise, and be specific.

If weight loss is your goal, set a specific amount to lose within a certain amount of time. Be reasonable whatever your goal might be. Remember, you’re not driving from Rhode Island to California in a day.

The Importance of Drinking Water

Did you know that water is the primary substance of the human body? Our bodies are made up of 70% water and our brains are made up of 85%! When we are at a 1% deficiency of water in our body we will become thirsty.  If we are at a 5% deficiency we will get a slight fever.  A 10% deficiency we will become immobile.  And a 12% loss of water would actually result in death.

The importance of water for a healthy body is much greater than most of us realize.  With all of the other beverage choices today, many are reaching for soda, an unlimited variety of coffees and juices loaded with sugar.  Most of those substitutes actually dehydrate us!  There is no other alternative to water that will keep the river of life flowing within us.

Here are some powerful reasons to drink water daily:

  1. Weight loss. Water is one of the best tools for weight loss, first of all because it often replaces high-calorie drinks like soda and juice and alcohol with a drink that doesn’t have any calories. But it’s also a great appetite suppressant, and often when we think we’re hungry, we’re actually just thirsty. Water has no fat, no calories, no carbs, no sugar. Drink plenty to help your weight loss routine.
  2. Heart healthy. Drinking a good amount of water could lower your risks of a heart attack.  Studies have shown that those who drink more than 5 glasses of water a day were 41% less likely to suffer a heart attack than those who drank less than two glasses.
  3. Energy. Being dehydrated can sap your energy and make you feel tired.  Even mild dehydration of as little as 1 or 2 percent of your body weight.  If you’re thirsty, you’re already dehydrated — and this can lead to fatigue, muscle weakness, dizziness and other symptoms.
  4. Headache cure. Another symptom of dehydration is headaches. In fact, often when we have headaches it’s simply a matter of not drinking enough water. Though there are lots of other causes of headaches, dehydration is a very common one.
  5. Healthy skin. Drinking water can clear up your skin and people often report a healthy glow after drinking water. It won’t happen overnight, of course, but just a week of drinking a healthy amount of water can have good effects on your skin.
  6. Digestive problems. Our digestive systems need a good amount of water to digest food properly. Often water can help cure stomach acid problems, and water along with fiber can cure constipation (often a result of dehydration).
  7. Cleansing. Water is used by the body to help flush out toxins and waste products from the body.
  8. Better exercise. Being dehydrated can severely reduce your athletic ability, slowing you down and making it harder to lift weights or perform cardiovascular activities.   Exercise requires additional water, so be sure to hydrate before, during and after exercise.

If you are unsure of how much water you should consume daily a general rule of thumb is to drink half of your body weight in ounces.  So for example if you were 150 lbs. you would need to take in 75 oz of water.  And as stated above if you are exercising you need to consume more accordingly.

Take care of yourself and your body.  Replenish its most vital nutrient! You’ll be amazed at the results.

What is it to ‘detox’ and why should we?

Why is it important to detox?

With the many fad diets today claiming to “cleanse” and “detox”, how do we choose and what does it actually mean for our health? The body has its own means of ridding itself of toxins. The natural process of detoxification happens in 2 phases.  The first phase prepares insoluble toxins and modifies them slightly to make them water soluble so the body can excrete them.  The second phase is the process of carrying these toxins and cleansing them from the body.

Detoxification requires adequate antioxidant reserves, ample hydration, a properly functioning Gastrointestinal tract, and a healthy liver.  If these elements are not properly working together detoxification can cause undue stress as the toxins actually become harmful by spreading free radical damage throughout the body. Lucky for us the body makes natural enzymes that counter these harmful compounds, but the best defense is to reduce our exposure to these toxins in the first place.

Glutathione – The Master Antioxidant

Glutathione is formed by the body and is its most powerful antioxidant but requires elements from the diet for proper formation.  Supplementary forms of glutathione are poorly absorbed and generally not recommended. Cysteine is the limiting amino acid in the production of glutathione and is found in high quantities in your cruciferous vegetables – things like kale, brussel sprouts and cauliflower.  Mom was on to something when she told you to eat our veggies!

When the body is undergoing phase I detoxification it is important to have antioxidant stores to battle these toxins that will actually turn into harmful free radicals. When undergoing phase II detoxification, it is important to drink plenty of purified water to flush them safely out the system.  The general rule is to drink half your body weight in ounces every day.

Is fasting the same as detoxing?

Programs that require you to fast more than 1-2 days can be harmful because they fail to provide the body with the necessary raw materials and antioxidants required to safely expel these harmful compounds.

The human body is fighting a constant battle with chemicals from pesticides, preservatives and additives in our food, smells in perfumes and colognes, chemicals in hygienic products like deodorants and shampoos, to the plastics in many commonly used containers and household products. Air pollution from industrial production, gasoline additives, and other sources are just taken for granted. It’s amazing that the human body is able to mount a defense against such enemies, but sooner or later something will give as the body focuses on clearing these chemicals foremost instead of working to prevent chronic diseases like cancer and heart disease and other effects of longstanding low-level inflammation.

Small Steps You Can Take Today

Choose your food wisely. Make sure your fish is wild caught and your beef and chicken is organic and grass/pasture fed. Buy local and in season. Focus on nutrient-dense foods full of detox-supporting nutrients.

Eat plenty of fiber from organic vegetables and fruits to help push excretion of harmful byproducts out of your system.

Purify drinking water through reverse osmosis and at the very least a carbon-based filter system.

Have numerous plants in your home to help purify the air

Leave your shoes at the door to keep from tracking in harmful chemicals from outside into your carpets and floors. Watch for harmful chemicals in carpeting such as formaldehyde.

Because of all of these potential sources of contamination from one’s diet and environment, many experts suggest detoxing 1-2 times a year as a minimum.

Awareness and prevention are the best defenses, but even small steps can go a long way in purifying your environment and lifestyle.
